Area guide - Stockport
Seven miles away from the centre of Manchester, Stockport is a thriving town and a municipal borough made up of several suburbs and residential areas, so there’s a lot of choice when it comes to properties – and what’s on their various doorsteps. Architecture is one of Stockport’s badges of pride, boasting 500 listed buildings and 37 conservation areas. But if you’re looking for something a bit more straightforward, lots of Stockport’s suburbs are among the most desirable spots in the region, providing an excellent alternative to Manchester’s most popular southern areas, with added bonus of the Peak District thrown in. With such good transport links – both local and across the UK – Stockport is one of those ‘best of both worlds’ locations that many locals would rather you didn’t know about.
Getting around
Stockport is extremely well connected for commuters and adventurers alike, with a big train station providing swift journeys to London and Manchester. Things will soon get even better too, with a transport interchange in the pipeline for Stockport bus station and metro links being talked about. Sitting on the southern edge of Manchester – right on the M60 – also means access to the region’s main motorways and biggest airport is straightforward.
Food and drink
Stockport’s growing café and bar scene is hot on the heels of South Manchester’s better known locations like Didsbury and Chorlton, with lots to explore in every direction. From fine dining in the old town at Where the Light Gets In, to the award-winning taprooms in the suburbs, such as Heaton Hops and The Chiverton Tap, food and drink are taken very seriously. The Produce Hall in Stockport Market Place also provides a contemporary way of sampling the best urban eating in the area in a stunning Grade II listed setting.
Stockport is a popular place for many Manchester commuters to settle, but the town itself has over 11,000 businesses, many in major employment areas like healthcare and education. Financial and creative sectors are increasingly spilling out of Manchester into Stockport, too, so professionals of all ages can find opportunities of all kinds.
Stockport’s offering for schools and further education is extremely strong, with a range of fee paying and state schools of a high standard. From the Ofsted Outstanding ranked Norris Bank and Tithe Barn Primary schools to the 500-year-old Stockport Grammar, extremely popular Aquinas College for Stockport school leavers, places and property are highly competed for. Stockport College also provides the borough’s primary educational institute, with foundation, undergraduate and adult courses, as well as apprenticeships on offer.
Local amenities
Stockport is peppered with all the essentials from banks to supermarkets to post offices, but it’s retail, leisure and exercise offering is growing too. One of the freshest and best examples is the Redrock Complex, with a state-of-the-art cinema, restaurants, bars and a gym – smack bang in the centre. With so many people flocking to Stockport’s excellent balance of property prices, quality of life and green space, there’s likely to be a lot more where that came from.
Green spaces
Stockport is famously leafy with a number of fantastic parks and woodlands strewn throughout its suburbs, and the River Mersey. Lyme Park and the 70-acre Bramhall Park are both fantastic escapes to play and roam, but if you want a real rural excursion then the glorious countryside of the Peak District National Park is right on the doorstep.

Popular with hikers, cyclists and countless other outdoor pursuit fans, the area stretches from Stockport’s eastern edge all the way to Sheffield, and between Huddersfield and Stoke north to south. Which is a serious amount of green space.
