Area guide - Withington
Follow the Oxford Road corridor south out of Manchester and eventually you’ll find Withington, sat between the student-centric Fallowfield and well-to-do Didsbury. Its location to the city – and both of these villages – gives it something nowhere else in south Manchester quite has – a relaxed, accessible vibe that’s the best of both worlds, twinned with great links to pretty much everywhere.
Getting around
Being on the Oxford Road corridor gives Withington residents access to one of the most regular bus routes in Europe. 24-hour double deckers run due north into the city centre, getting you there in less than 40 minutes, and cyclists can also opt for the direct option, with the addition of new cycle paths making the journey even easier. Of course, buses do run elsewhere too, and this is probably the easiest option for getting about. Mauldeth Road is Withington’s nearest train station, about a five- minute drive away. But Stockport station is just 15 mins by car, connecting you to the regular London Euston service which can get you to the capital in less than 2 hours.
Food and drink
Because it’s situated in something of a sweet spot for young professionals, young families and students, Withington understandably has a lot of great food on the doorstep. From Boho Utopia vegan restaurant to the longstanding Fuel café bar, and Kyotoya Japanese restaurant, there’s an eclectic choice catering for a wide range of appetites, as well as lots of traditional pubs too.

Hop on a bus and you can party late in neighbouring Fallowfield, grab a curry in Rusholme, or head out of the city to explore some of the best food in south Manchester in Didsbury and West Disbury. The legendary Aladdin restaurant on Wilmslow Road is just 7 minutes’ walk away, serving some of the best Middle Eastern food in the city.
Schools
Like its neighbours, Withington is handy for some of the best primary and senior schools in the city. Old Moat Primary, St Paul’s C of E Primary, St Cuthberts Primary, West Didsbury Primary and Cavendish Community Primary are all within about 12 minutes’ walk. Withington Girls' School, Manchester High School for Girls, The Manchester Grammar School, and the recently opened Didsbury High School are extremely convenient too. Just up Wilmslow Road is Manchester Muslim Prep School, the North West’s premier Islamic independent preparatory school.
Local amenities
The centre of Withington is well stocked for food shopping, from a Sainsbury’s local and a Co-op Food, plus lots of independents of all stripes. It has a post office, library, banks and its own swimming pool and leisure facility too.
Green spaces
From Withington, the nearest open green space is Fog Lane Park, offering football pitches, tennis courts, a pond and playground, all looked over by mature trees and local wildlife.

However, a short trip down Palatine Road gives you access to lush walks in both directions along the river Mersey. If you’re in the mood, you can walk or bike all the way to Stockport, or out to Chorlton and Stretford Meadows in the other direction, with plenty of places to stop off for an ice cream or drink along the way.
